ABOUT US
The Founders
A Pair of Doves Pictures was created by two friends who love to watch and make
movies. Maggie Hai-Uyen and Huy Chheng met on the set of the vampire flick
Gyonshi in
2005. They became friends and began to collaborate in subsequent projects. A
casual meeting at a Tapioca Express store in San Gabriel Valley led the pair to take a
major creative step forward in their careers. No strangers to challenging tasks,
both Maggie and Huy are ambitious UC-educated daughters of immigrant parents
who chose to pursue an artistic career that guarantees no immediate financial
stability, or any at all.
Maggie Hai-Uyen began her acting career in
the winter of 2005 after graduating from the
University of California, Berkeley. Maggie abandoned her plans for law school
during her last semester in college upon completing the honors thesis, which
studies age-difference relationships in films. She heard her calling and moved
to Los Angeles to follow that dream. It was a risky, ballsy move; she had no
industry credits, no industry connections, and no friends in the Los Angeles
area. All she had, in fact, was determination and optimism.
On her third day in Los Angeles, Maggie began to study acting with Eric Morris.
Within a year, she landed two leading roles in two feature films, Gyonshi and
Love Sick Diaries, both currently in post-production.
Utilizing her access to the entertainment industry and her previous training in
business journalism and media communications, Maggie coordinates and produces
events and Hollywood awards show. Most recently, she coordinated and produced
the 14th Annual Diversity Awards show for the Multicultural Motion Picture
Association.
As a child, Huy Chheng knew she wanted to pursue arts, which developed into a
passion for filmmaking after taking her first course at the University of
California, Los Angeles. Since then, filmmaking and finding funding for her
movies have been Huy’s ongoing mission.
In spring of 2006, Huy completed her Master’s Degree in Film Studies at
University of California, Los Angeles. By this time, the Los Angeles' Echo Park native has
directed several shorts, documentaries, and feature films that screened at
several film festivals.
Her first feature film, Sweet and Sour, a coming-of-age drama about three
best-friends of Los Angeles’ Chinatown, was among the selected few to be
screened by the China Institute in the summer of 2003. In addition to the
screening, Huy was also offered to study abroad at the China Film Institute. A
wonderful offer but she had to decline and opted for the UCLA Graduate Program.
Currently wrapping and post-editing a feature film and a short film, Huy continues to
be inspired by people, events, and stories in which she nurtures for her
directorial repertoire.
Although Huy and Maggie seemed to share a similar upbringing based on the
educational setting that anchored their jump into the films industry, each came
from very different environments, and thus, different experiences and different
stories. Nonetheless, Huy and Maggie has a mutual love for films and filmmaking.
For as long as their love for motion picture lasts, they will bring their own knowledge to
complement each other's filmmaking career and develop their creative vehicle, A
Pair of Doves Pictures.
The Staff
On October 7, 2006, A Pair of Doves Pictures held its "Three Narratives"
screening at the historic East West Players Theater in Los Angeles. A grand
opening event that showcases Huy's directorial works and executively produced by
Maggie. The event was a modest publicity success thanks to event producers Harry
Du Young and Janet Chu, both are long time friends of Huy and Maggie's co-stars
in Gyonshi.
In the winter of 2006, Harry and Janet joined A Pair of Doves Pictures team as
producers.
Harry Du Young, a native of San Francisco initially moved to Southern California
to further his dream as a track athlete. An encounter with the entertainment
industry in 1987 gradually led him to pursue "the serious acting stuff." Since
1996, he has been in numerous plays, independent and student films. While still
waiting for a breakthrough role in TV and/or film, Harry has been devoting
himself to production and behind the scene work. The year 2006 marks the first
time where he was credited as an Associate Producer and Producer in creative
projects.
Janet Chu was born and raised in Los Angeles. Among the few Asian Americans
escaping cultural expectations and limitations to become an artist in Hollywood,
Janet discovered her inner ambition for filmmaking through a grade school film
project with a good ol' video camcorder. Today, she studies acting intensively
with Johnny Sarno. Planning ahead for her future, Janet is tapping into
producing, set designing, and learning about screenwriting.
